Director Liam Rees got assaulted by a police officer at a protest. Ever since, he can’t stop thinking about the Roman Empire. So he’s made a show about it.
My Roman Empire tells the story of a time in ancient Rome, when police violently crack down on protests, before staging a coup against the Emperor.
But during rehearsals, the director's relationship to the actors comes to mirror the relationship between the Emperor and the police that once swore to serve him.
Playfully theatrical, provocative and hopefully funny, My Roman Empire examines power, violence and the point of art when the world seems to be collapsing around us.
Supported by Creative Scotland, Arts Council (Ireland), Playwrights Studio Scotland, MAKE, TalentLAB (Theatres de la Ville de Luxembourg), EPAD, and Assembly Roxy.
Why We Programmed My Roman Empire
Liam is an idiosyncratic theatre maker who soaks up influences and incorporates them into his own distinctive way of making theatre. His work is fun, playful and metatheatrical and his international perspective is exciting in a nation increasingly looking inwards.
