DARWIN, NEVADA

A road story about the migration of the species and the risk of extinction of scientific thought.

Italian theatre artist Marco Paolini and Vanishing Point’s Matthew Lenton take us to Darwin, Nevada; a town of 27 inhabitants on the border between California and Nevada. There, a young climate activist fleeing the flooded Burning Man festival, a fundamentalist sheriff, and thousands of monarch butterflies are all elements in their story - the story of a man who incubates the egg of a new idea, but is reluctant to lay it and keeps it inside, waiting for the right time...

Mitigation or adaptation? This is the crucial question of the century of climate change. On the planet, we are the species at the top of the chain, not just the food chain; will we be able to act to mitigate the impact of our lifestyle that puts not only other species but also the social geography of the world at risk?

What does Charles Darwin, a man who said we come from molluscs, have to do with all this? Was Darwin a leftist? Now a rightist? Darwin who?

This major new international co-production will begin development in autumn 2024 at Piccolo Theatre (Milan). Piccolo will host the world premiere on 22 January 2025, followed by an Italian tour. The production will premiere in Scotland in 2026/27.
